The Ontological politics of Sámi Cultural Heritage

The aim of this multi- and cross-disciplinary research project is to generate novel understanding on Sámi cultural heritage and its intertwining to the processes of indigenization of society. The theoretical starting point of the project is based on the idea of ontological plurality: cultural heritage is realised in different social, cultural, legal and political practices that build its various realities. We study (building) the multiple worlds of Sámi cultural heritage particularly in connection with processes of indigenization and decolonization in the Sámi museum, art and political activities. A central aim of the project is to develop and carry out methods of knowledge production and dissemination based on Sámi thinking and acting.
